Carles, one of Blair county's oldest citizens, died this morning at 5:45 o'clock, at the home of her grandson, Don Gibson, in Duncansville. Mrs. Carles would have observed her 93d anniversary next Wednesday, had she lived. She was born in the Loop, Frankstown township, Feb. 24, 1833. Mrs. Carles was a most remarkable woman. She scarcely knew what it was to be sick and retained all her faculties to a remarkable degree, until about six weeks ago when she began to fail. She was very active and spent much of her time visiting her children and neighbors. She was the daughter of Solomon and Mrs. Susan Casner and resided in the Loop for fifty-five years. For thirty-three years she resided in Frankstown and for the past five years had her home with her grandson in Duncansville. On April 17, 1852, she was united in marriage with Christian Carles, who died on April 6, 1914. To this union, eight children were born, five of whom survive. They are Mrs. Jane Dunmire of Frankstown, Joseph and Howard Carles of Altoona, Mrs. Annie Kauffman of Geeseytown and Mrs. Florie Boose of Altoona. She is also survived by one brother, John Casner, the well known Civil war veteran residing in Blair township, near Duncansville. Twenty grandchildren, fifty-seven great-grandchildren and twenty great-great-grandchildren also survive, making a total of 102 direct descendants living. She was a lifelong member of the Lutheran church, being affiliated with that denomination in Geeseytown. She had a vivid recollection of the events leading up to and during the great Civil strife between the north and south and know Altoona as a village of but a few houses. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday afternoon. The cortege will leave the Gibson home in Duncansville at 2 o'clock and proceed to Geeseytown where services will be conducted in the Lutheran church by Rev. Isaac Krider, assisted by Rev. Julian Park, pastor of the Duncansville Presbyterian church. Interment will be made in Geeseytown cemetery. Altoona Mirror, Thursday evening, February 18, 1926, Page 1 FUNERAL OF MRS. CARLES VERY LARGELY ATTENDED The funeral service for Mrs. Anna M. Carles, Duncansville's oldest resident, who passed away last Thursday morning, less than a week before her 93rd birthday would have been observed, was held on last Saturday afternoon at the Geeseytown Lutheran church, of which she was a long time member. In the absence of a regular pastor at the Geeseytown church, her former pastor, Rev. Isaac Krider of the Duncansville Lutheran church, officiated. He was assisted by the Rev. Julian Park, A. M., pastor of the Duncansville Presbyterian church. The cortege moved from the residence of John E. Gibson in Duncansville, where the aged woman resided for the past five years, promptly at 2 o'clock. The service at the church was resumed at 2:30 o'clock. Appropriate tributes to respect to the memory of the deceased were paid by the pastors at the service. Following the service, which was very largely attended by relatives and friends of the deceased, who was a life-long resident of central Blair county, the body was laid to rest in the Geeseytown Lutheran cemetery, beside that of her husband, who preceded her to the grave nearly twelve years ago. There were scores of beautiful floral tributes. The death of Mrs. Carles removes one of Blair county's oldest and best known residents. A total of 102 descendents survive, including five of the eight children born to her. At the funeral Saturday, sorrowing friends and relatives crowded the church to its capacity, many standing during the service. The church choir rendered several very appropriate vocal numbers during the service. Altoona Mirror, February 22, 1926
