As is usual when a freight train pulls out from Twenty-fourth street, a number of strangers took passage yesterday. This is one of the things which the company is powerless to prevent, as the number of men who beat their way over the road is always in excess of the crew of the train. Among those who jumped on train drawn by extra 1123 yesterday was a man named Joseph Casey. When Bennington was reached he attempted to jump off, but in doing so slipped and fell to the rails beneath. He was terribly mangled from the middle of the body down and only lived long enough to tell his name and that Massachusetts was his native state. It was first intended to take him to Gallitzin for medical treatment, but he died before that station was reached. Then his body was placed on mail express and brought to Altoona, where it was placed in charge of Undertaker Arthur. Coroner Poet was notified but did not deem it necessary to hold an inquest.
