CASEY, County Assessor, Killed at Bennington at 9:30 O'Clock Last Evening At 9:30 last night, Patrick F. Casey, a county assessor residing at Bennington, was returning home from his day's work in that capacity. In order to reach his home it was necessary for him to cross the P.R.R. tracks and while doing so he was struck by an east bound train and knocked a considerable distance to the west bound track, where another train going westward caught the lifeless body and dragged about 240 feet, horribly mutilating it. The head, both arms and both legs were severed and the remains, when found by a track walker about ten minutes later, were an unrecognizable mass of mutilated flesh and bones. When found they were gathered in a store box and taken to a tool house nearby, where they were kept until morning, when Coroner Poet, of this city, was summoned. Mr. Poet went up the mountain this morning, but, from the circumstances surrounding the case, deemed an inquest unnecessary. On examining the remains, Mr. Casey's assessor's book was found in his pocket covered with blood. Not a stitch of clothing was left on the body by the cars, even the shoes having been torn from his feet. The unfortunate man was about 43 years of age and married. He leaves, besides his wife and eight children, (the oldest of whom is eighteen,) a brother and two sisters, all of whom reside in Bennington. He was somewhat of a local politician and enjoyed the respect of the community in which he resided. Altoona Mirror, Altoona, Pa., Thursday Evening, April 13, 1893
