Caswell, one of the oldest residents of this city, died of diseases incident to age at 10:15 o'clock Tuesday morning, at the home of his son, Joseph W. Caswell, 3011 Maple avenue. He was born April 27, 1818, in Massachusetts and when quite young located in Baltimore, entering a large nail manufacturing plant there. Later he removed to Sharpsburg, Md., where he followed his trade as a nail maker until the outbreak of the Civil war, when he enlisted in the First Maryland regiment. During the battle of Gettysburg, in which he participated his oldest son was shot and instantly killed. After the war Mr. Caswell became a boatman on the Chesapeake and Ohio canal, running a boat there for twelve years. After that he came to Altoona and for a few years conducted a confectionery store here. About nineteen years ago he retired and since then has not been engaged in any business. He married November 4, 1844, Miss Elizabeth Bowers, who died some years ago, and was the father of nine children, four of whom survive, George W., Alpheus and Joseph William, of Altoona and Robert S., teacher of music in the Huntingdon reformatory. Funeral services will be held at St. Paul's Lutheran church at 2.30 Thursday afternoon. Private interment in Fairview cemetery. November 4, 1908 clipping
