He had been in ill health for the last three months. He was born at Sharpsburg, Maryland, November 17, 1854, and at the age of eight years witnessed the battle of Antietam from South Mountain. In his early years he was employed by his father on a canal boat on the Cumberland canal. He had been a resident of Altoona since 1873. For 40 years he was employed by the Altoona Iron company, and prior to his retirement three years ago was employed as a janitor at the Allegheny school building for more than 15 years. He was married to Miss Elizabeth Eckles on April 4, 1882. She survives with the following sons and daughters, Fred W., George A., Ralph S., Mrs. Stella Beck and Mrs. Ethel Richards, all of Altoona. He is also survived by one brother, J. M. Caswell, of Altoona; nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. He was a member of the Twenty-eighth Street Church of the Brethren and the Amalgamated Association of Steel and Iron Workers. Funeral service will be held at 2.30 p.m. Wednesday at the church, in charge of the pastor, the Rev. B. F. Waltz. Interment will follow in Rose Hill cemetery. Altoona Tribune, August 17, 1931 _____ MRS. ELIZABETH CASWELL Of 2913 Eighth avenue, widow of Albert Caswell died at her home at 8 o'clock Saturday evening after an extended illness. She was born in Etna, Blair County, on March 25, 1865, a daughter of Christopher and Eliza (Stephens) Eckles, and on April 4, 1882, married Mr. Caswell, who died on Aug. 15, 1931. Surviving are three sons and two daughters, Fred W., George A., Ralph S., Mrs. Stella Beck, and Mrs. Ethel Richards, all of the city; nine grandchildren, seventeen great- grandchildren, and two brothers, Charles Eckles of McKeesport and Joseph Eckles of the city. Mrs. Caswell was a member of the Broad Avenue Methodist church. The body may be viewed at the home. Altoona Mirror, April 19, 1937 _____ FRED W. CASWELL A pipefitter helper, Juniata shop, P.R.R., died at his home, 2817 Sixth avenue, at 10.30 o'clock last night after several months illness. He was born in Altoona, Jan. 8, 1885, a son of Albert and Elizabeth (Eckles) Caswell. Before being employed by the company he worked for Cassidy Candy company for twenty-one years, and prior to that was employed at the Altoona Iron foundry. Surviving are his widow, Ida May (Wilt) Caswell; a son, Elton James, Altoona; four grand- children; two brothers and two sisters, George A. and Ralph S. Caswell, Mrs. Joseph C. Beck and Mrs. David Richards, all of Altoona. Mr. Caswell was a member of the Twenty-eighth Street Church of the Brethren and the Men's Bible class. Friends will be received at the home after 7 o'clock tonight. CASWELL - Funeral services for Fred W. Caswell of 2817 Sixth Avenue will be held at the Twenty-eighth Street Church of the Brethren on Tuesday afternoon at 2. Service in charge of Rev. Glenn Norris. Altoona Mirror, May 12, 1945 _____ JAMES BELL CASWELL Son of Alpheus and Elizabeth Caswell of 2910 Eighth avenue, died this morning at 6:20 o'clock, at the family residence, from typhoid fever. Deceased was born on June 6, 1891, in this city, was educated in the Altoona public schools. He was up until his illness in the employ of the Altoona Iron company. Besides his parents, three brothers and three sisters survive. They are: Fred, George, Ralph, Stella, Ethel, all at home, and Mrs. Lottie Bennett. Deceased was a member of St. Paul's church and Sunday school. The funeral will be held on Saturday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, Services to be conducted by the pastor, Rev. George F. Snyder. Interment will be made in Rose Hill cemetery. He was born in Sharpsburg, Md., Dec. 3, 1868, the son of George A. and Elizabeth Caswell. His wife, Mrs. Gertrude E. Caswell died in 1945. Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. William Sandrus, at home, one granddaughter and five great-grandchildren. Mrs. Caswell was a retired employe of the Altoona Iron company and a member of St. Paul's Lutheran church. Friends are being received at the Laughlin funeral home. Altoona Mirror, November 16, 1953
