CATES Of 5617 Wren Ave., El Paso, Texas, formerly of Martinsburg, died at 6:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 8, 1978, in his home, following an extended illness. He retired as a sergeant from the Army after 25 years service. He was born Dec. 2, 1910, in Emo, Ontario, Canada, a son of George I. and Robina (Gadd) Cates, and May 10, 1944, in Martinsburg married Naomi Ritchey. Surviving are his wife and five brothers and sisters, Mrs. Ellen Whitaker and Mrs. Muriel Replogle, of Martinsburg RD 2, Mrs. Isla Whitaker of Martinsburg RD 1, Joseph C., of Altoona and I. Robert of Wichita, Kan. Mr. Cates was a member of Highland Presbyterian Church, El Paso, Texas, and had been a member of the Mount Pleasant Church of Christ, Martinsburg RD. He was a member of the VFW. He served in the Army in Europe during World War II and in the Korean war. Altoona Mirror, March 9, 1978 CATES - Funeral services for Sgt. M. Cates of 5617 Wren Ave., El Paso, Texas, formerly of Martinsburg, will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, in the John C. Bolger Associates Funeral Home, Martinsburg, by the Rev. Marion E. Smith.
