"Al" Cellini [photo] Dec. 13, 1920 - April 4, 2007 CELLINI Albert L. "Al" Cellini, 86, Altoona, died Wednesday at Altoona Regional Health System, Bon Secours Hospital Campus. He was born in Altoona, son of the late Salvatore and Therese (DeSilva) Cellini. He married Jenny Bruno Aug. 6, 1946, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church. Surviving are his wife; two daughters: Alberta (Cellini) Ake and husband, Clifford, and Patricia (Cellini) Caum and fiance, LeRoy Miller, all of Altoona; a granddaughter, Allison Leigh Ake; two brothers: Pat Cellini and wife, Mary Jo, and Richard Cellini and wife, Bernice, all of Altoona; two sisters: Irene Pasquino of Wickcliffe, Ohio, and Sally Cellini of East Lake, Ohio; and a number of nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Harry; and sister, Elvira. He was a veteran of WWII. Al enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps, Third Marine Division, serving 42 months in the states and on the islands of Guam and Iwo Jima. He was a 52-year member of A&J Iaia American Legion Post 827. Al was a 1938 graduate of Altoona High School and Penn State University with bachelor's and master's degrees and returned for post- master's studies in education. Before entering the field of education, Mr. Cellini worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad Co. while attending the university. Beginning his teaching career at Keith Junior High School as a student teacher of English and social studies in 1953, Al was transferred to Altoona High School in 1958-59 as a teacher of English and social studies. He became chairman of the social studies department, and in 1968, he was named Keith Junior High School principal - a position he held until he retired in 1981. While in education, Mr. Cellini served in various positions. He was faculty president of Keith and Altoona High schools. He served as department chairman and president of the Altoona Area School District Middle Management Team and served as director of elementary and secondary students, a federal program project for disadvantaged students, during the summers. He served on a Penn State University School Evaluation team, evaluating the entire Hempfield Area School District. In retirement, Mr. Cellini voluntarily evaluated a number of parochial schools in the Altoona-Johnstown area. He taught English, speech and composition for the American Institute of Banking-Altoona Chapter, now the Keystone Chapter of Banking. He served in this capacity for 30 years, for which he was awarded the Keystone Valley Chapter Award in 1991, recognizing his many years of service. In 1989, the Altoona Area School District presented Mr. Cellini with a plaque honoring him for his career in education. The Blair Lodge 958 of Altoona Order of Sons of Italy in America honored him for having excelled in his chosen profession. At a special awards Mass in Johnstown in May 1994, executive director John Sroka of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul presented Al with the Frederick Ozanam plaque for his generous and unselfish contributions of personal resources as a board member and commissioned Stephen Ministry leader and as a member of the all-volunteer Vincentian Family. His training for this leadership was at Loyola College, Baltimore. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today, April 6, at The Stevens Mortuary Inc., 1421 Eighth Ave., Altoona (www.stevensmortuary.com). Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 7, 2007, at Stevens Memorial Chapel. Committal at Calvary Cemetery. There will be a memorial Mass held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 14, 2007, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, Altoona.
