Charles, age 86, of RD 3, Tyrone, died Tuesday Oct. 26, 2004 in the emergency room of Tyrone Hospital. He was born May 16, 1918 in Altoona, the son of Robert W. and Ruth V. VanScoyoc Charles. On Jan. 17, 1942 at Indiantown Gap Military Reservation he married Phyllis V. Lynn who survives. Also surviving is one son, Robert W. Charles and wife Lisa of Ranchester, WY; two grandchildren, Kelly DeeAnn Blea of Dayton, WY and Aubrey Decker of Ranchester, WY and three great-granddaughters. He was preceded in death by one sister, Janet Yederlinic of Cocoa Beach, FL. Mr. Charles was a member of the First English Lutheran Church. He was a graduate of Tyrone High School Class of 1937. He was an Eagle Scout and at one time had served as Chairperson of Troop 103. He had been employed in the lab at Westvaco for 33 years. He served as secretary/treasurer of the Snyder Township supervisors from 1972 to 1984, retiring in 1984 with 12 years of service. Mr. Charles was an Army veteran of World War II with service in the Mediterranean-African-European Theater. In 1937 he enlisted in the old Sheridan Troop and entered active service with Troop B, 104th Armored Cavalry. Later he served with the 107th, 108th and 27th Armored Cavalry. He received a battlefield commission while in the European Theater. He received the ETO ribbon with two battle stars. He was a member of the Army of Occupation and retired from the armed forces reserve with 23 years service. He was a recipient of the T. J. Stewart award and the World War II Victory Medal. Mr. Charles was a member of the Anderson Denny Post #4559 V.F.W.; Howard Gardner Post #281 American Legion, Tyrone B.P.O.E. #212 and the United States Cavalry Association. There was no public visitation. Interment was made in Bald Eagle Cemetery at the convenience of the family with Pastor T. M. Talbot Moses officiating.
