Christian [photo], a nephew of Mrs. H. M. Ramsey, of 306 Twenty- third street, and attached to the naval aero service, died as the result of injuries sustained while bathing at Virginia Beach on Sunday, September 1. He was buried with military honors at Roanoke, Va., on Tuesday. James H. Christian formerly lived at Roanoke and was employed as a pattern maker by the Norfolk & Western Railroad company. When he heard the call of his country he enlisted in the aerial service of the United States navy and since December had been stationed at Norfolk. Taking advantage of a forty- eight hour leave from his duties on Sunday, September 1, he went to Virginia beach, accompanied by his wife. While diving he suffered a fatal injury to his spine. He was 24 years of age and besides his wife is survived by a little daughter, Elizabeth, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. S. S. Christian, two sisters, Mrs. J. P. Guerrant and Miss Dorothy Christian and a brother, Thomas. The funeral services were conducted at the First Presbyterian church, Roanoke, on Tuesday, September 3, and were of a military character. The altar was banked with flowers, many being from the navy and base hospital at his station. The remains were escorted to the Evergreen cemetery by Home Defense Police, where the military services were concluded. Altoona Tribune, Tuesday, September 10, 1918, page 12
