Clifford, a veteran of the Civil war and a retired Pennsy employe, died yesterday morning at 8 o'clock in the Altoona hospital, following a stroke of paralysis. He was aged 72 and resided at 2111 Thirteenth avenue. Mr. Clifford served in the Civil war for three years and nine months as a member of company F, 135th Pennsylvania volunteers, and company A, 186th infantry. He was retired from the Pennsy service on December 1, 1915. He was born in Ligonier, the son of James and Matilda Clifford, and spent his early life at Lockport, coming to this city in 1884. He was a member of the Presbyterian church. Besides his wife, he is survived by the following children: Paul, Charles C., Mrs. J. C. Wakefield, J. Fred, Edward W., I. Gillson, Hugh R., and George F., the last six being residents of this city. He is also survived by two brothers and one sister. The remains can be viewed in rest room No. 3, the N. A. Stevens mortuary, at any time. Funeral services will be held at the mortuary chapel tomorrow afternoon at 3:30 o'clock. The body will be taken on Monday morning at 7:40 o'clock to Bolivar, Pa., where interment will be made. Altoona Tribune, Saturday Morning, May 11, 1918, page 14
