Harry Colbert Received Fatal Injuries This Afternoon. About 2:15 this afternoon, while trying to make a coupling in the shop yard at Second street, Harry Colbert, of Howard avenue and First street, was thrown under the wheels and fatally injured. The young man is employed as a brakeman on engine No. 1154, which does shop work throughout the yard. When hurt the young man was standing on the platform of a car. In reaching down to make the coupling he lost his footing and fell. The wheels passed over his left arm and left leg, grinding them almost off. He was rolled under the train for some distance and badly skinned and bruised, and it is feared he is hurt internally. The ambulance was called and he was taken to the hospital, where all that is possible is being done for him, but it is feared by the physicians that he will not stand the shock. The young man is aged about 24 years and is unmarried. His father, Benjamin Colbert, was with his boy a few minutes after the accident happened and went to the hospital with him. COLBERT THE UNFORTUNATE He Slipped from a Moving Car and Fell Under the Wheels--Died at the Hospital from His Injuries. HE WAS TERRIBLY CRUSHED Harry Louis Colbert, a brakeman in Levan's yard, was fatally injured while at work at 2.10 o'clock yesterday afternoon and died at the hospital at 5.30 o'clock. Colbert was a member of the Conductor John Powell's crew, with engine No. 1154, which does the shifting in the car shop yard. The crew was engaged in shifting cars near the paint shop at Third street. Colbert was riding on the car next to the engine. He was standing on the step and in reaching over to pull the pin to cut off the car he slipped and fell under the wheels. The car passed over him, crushing his left leg to the thigh and the left arm to the shoulder, also breaking the bones in the right foot and badly lacerating it. At the time of the accident the unfortunate young man's father was at work about a square away and was with his son a few minutes before he was removed to the hospital in the ambulance. At the hospital he was made as easy as possible as it was seen he could not recover. He lingered in a semi-conscious condition until 5:30 o'clock when he passed away. Harry Louis Colbert was a son of B.F. and Annie E. Colbert, of Howard avenue and First street, and was born at Williamsburg. Had he lived until November 7 he would have been 24 years of age. He came to this city with his parents ten years ago and for four years has been employed as a brakeman. He was an estimable young man and a favorite with his fellow workmen. Besides his parents he is survived by three brothers, Albert, Lloyd and Edgar, and one sister, Della, all at home. The funeral will take place Monday. Coroner McCartney decided an inquest unnecessary. Altoona, PA Altoona Tribune, Altoona, Pa., Saturday, September 2, 1899, p. 5, col. 1
