Confer, an aged and widely known citizen of Altoona, and a veteran of the Civil war, died at his home, 1600 Sixteenth street, at 5:20 o'clock yesterday afternoon. He was born July 17, 1836, at Newry, and fifty-two years ago was married to Miss Cecelia Kurn. Years ago Mr. Confer conducted the old Confer hotel, near the "Y" switches, the hostelry being very popular with railroad men. Later he conducted the Model grocery in this city. During the Civil war he enlisted in the First Pennsylvania reserve cavalry, serving in Company G of the regiment for about three years. He was widely known as Captain Confer because of his army record. Three sisters and two brothers survive, as follows: George, of Washington; John, of Johnstown; and Mrs. J. E. Carroll, Mrs. Dougherty and Miss Martha, all of this city. The funeral will be held with requiem mass at St. John's church at 10 o'clock Thursday morning, followed by interment in St. John's cemetery.
