Council, one of the oldest residents of the city, and retired Pennsylvania Railroad company employee, died at 1:05 o'clock yesterday morning at the family home, 1509 Ninth street. He had been in failing health for the past several years. The deceased was born November 23, 1844 at Philadelphia, the son of Joseph E. and Mary Council, his father being a contractor in his native city. He was in his 80th year at his death. Mr. Council entered the employ of the railroad company at Wilmington, Del. during August 1885 and on July 1890 he was transferred to the Juniata ships, where he acted as foreman of the machine shops under Master Mechanic H. J. Gordon. After several years spent at Juniata he returned to Philadelphia and was there for a period of four years, coming back to Altoona in 1897. He entered the Twelfth street machine shops as a mechanic and remained in that capacity until his retirement January 1, 1916. He was united in marriage to Miss Mary Frances Painter, on November 24, 1891, in this city. He is survived by his widow and two sons, Henry Gordon Council, of Greensburg and Joseph Earl Council, of this city. One sister, Mrs. Samuel Vance, of Altoona, and three grandchildren also survive. He was a member of the First Presbyterian church, the Oriental lodge of The F. and A. M. at Wilmington, Del., and was a charter member of the Ben Davis Lodge, I. O. O. F. of Altoona.
