All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/pa/blair/ _________________________________________ ELIAS CROFT COWAN Elias Croft Cowan, residing for more than 50 years on the old Cowan homestead farm south of Roaring Spring in Taylor township, died there yesterday morning at 5:15 o'clock. In failing health for several years, he was practically retired. Born on the farm which has been handed down from generation to generation since 1790 on February 9, 1858, he was a son of Davis N. and Elizabeth Croft Cowan. He farmed all his life. The Cowan farm is a part of the original tract taken up by his grandfather and patented in 1790. The original patent, printed on sheepskin, which his grandfather received from the government is still in the family's possession. Mr. Cowan married Catherine Pote September 29, 1885. He had served several terms as a member of the Taylor township board of education. An ardent Republican, he served on the Republican county committee on a number of occasions. He was active in civic affairs. Members of the family include his wife, three children, Mrs. Rhoda Cowan Stern and Charles E., of Lancaster, and Mrs. Russell Gates of Roaring Spring, six grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs. Edward Wetzel of Burnside and Mrs. L. Baker of Roaring Spring, and two brothers, AAA. Cowan of Martinsburg and Dr. E. D. Cowan of Cottonwood, South Dakota. Mr. Cowan was a member of the Bare Memorial Church of God in Roaring Spring.
