Death of an Aged Resident of Altoona Tuesday. At noon Tuesday Mrs. Ellen Cowen died at her residence, corner of Ninth avenue and Seventeenth street, of Bright's disease. She was aged 73 years, 7 months and 27 days, and all these years were spent in Blair county. Mrs. Cowen was born in Morrison's Cove on the 20th day of September, 1813, her maiden name being Ellen Masden. Some time after her married to Edward L. Cowen she, with her husband, removed to the vicinity of Bellwood, where Mr. Cowen worked at his trade, that of a miller. They came to Altoona when it was but a struggling village and when the place now occupied by the late residence of the deceased was covered with woods, and here they resided until Mr. Cowen's death which occurred November 20, 1854. About a year afterward Mrs. Cowen moved again to the Cove, coming back to Altoona some twenty years ago and making this place her home until she was summoned to the unknown world. Deceased had been in failing health for years. Four years ago she became blind and thus unable to do any work. Yet she seemed perfectly resigned and was tenderly cared for by her daughter, Miss Rachel Cowen, who relinquished her chosen path in life, that of a school teacher, to minister to the wants of her widowed mother. Three and one-half months ago the beginning of the end came and two weeks ago she was forced to take her bed, from which she never rose again in health. Death found her ready for its coming, and quietly and peacefully the soul returned to its Maker. Mrs. Cowen was the mother of nine children, of whom three are living. These are Mrs. Annetta Reigh, Miss Rachel Cowen and A. M. Cowen, all of this city. The deceased was a member of the First Lutheran church and had been for years. Her funeral will take place Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Services will be held at the house and will be conducted by Rev. E. D. Weigle. Interment in Fairview cemetery.
