All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/pa/blair/ _________________________________________ Stewart Cowen, who has been ailing for some years, died at the soldiers' home, Erie, Pa., on Sunday night, from paralysis. He was born at Hagerty's Cross roads, in Clearfield county, May 4, 1832, and at death was aged 65 years, 4 months and 8 days. During the greater portion of his life he was a farmer. His wife died in Tyrone in 1869. Four children survive: Stewart C. and John Cowen, of Tyrone; G. D. Cowen, of Philadelphia, and Mrs. Robert Morris, of Punxsutawney. Two brothers and one sister also survive: Matthew Cowen, of Coalport; Robert Cowen, of California; and Mrs. A. P. Shoof, of Madera, Pa. Two brothers, James and Thomas were killed in the army - one in front of Petersburg and one at Antietam. During the war the deceased served in company M, Thirteenth Pennsylvania cavalry. At the battle of Stony Creek, Va., October, 1864, his horse was shot from under him, at which time he received his first injury. He was one of sixty men detailed from the Thirteenth regiment at the surrender of General Joseph E. Johnston and was in the last battle of Grant's campaign at Durham, N.C. He was a member of post 468, Grand Army of the Republic, of Altoona, and also a member of the Methodist Episcopal church. In politics he was an old time whig, and afterwards a stalwart republican. His remains were brought to this station on main line express east yesterday at noon. Funeral services were held in the First Methodist Episcopal church, Logan avenue and Twelfth street, at 3:30 p.m., and were conducted by Revs. Horace Lincoln Jacobs and John D. Stewart. Interment was made in Tyrone cemetery. Another old soldier has answered the final roll call and an additional grave is to be decorated next Memorial Day.
