In the death yesterday of Major Richard J. Crozier at his home, 1118 Eighth avenue, at 10 o'clock in the morning, there passed from mortality to immortality one of Altoona's most respected citizens. He had been in failing health for several years past and the direct cause of his death was heart failure. The deceased was a native of Ireland and was born there 76 years ago. When a youth he came to this country and thirty-five years ago came to Altoona and resided here ever since. He saw service in two wars - that with Mexico and the one between the north and the south. He responded to the call for volunteers in 1861, being one of those who enlisted for ninety days. Later he joined the Sixty-second regiment, Pennsylvania volunteers, and was promoted major for gallantry on the field of action. He was twice wounded at the battle of Gaines' Mills in 1862. It was while he was home on a furlough because of these wounds that he was married to Miss Lucy Lowe, who survives him, with the following children: Russell and Edgar, of Philadelphia, John, of Harrisburg, Mrs. William L. Gartland, Virginia and Lucy, of this city, and Richard, of Pittsburg. For many years he was engaged in the paper and paint business in this city. He was a charter member of the Eighth Avenue Methodist Episcopal church. The funeral will take place on Thursday afternoon at an hour yet to be decided upon. Altoona Tribune, Wednesday, May 16, 1900
