Cruse died yesterday morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Nettie Straw, of 1120 Sixth avenue, of diseases incident to old age. . . .* He was a life long resident of Altoona, a widely known and highly esteemed citizen and one of the last surviving residents of the time when the city was founded. He served three years in the Civil war, having a most enviable record for valor. He enlisted in Company E, Third Pennsylvania Volunteer infantry, April 20, 1861, was mustered out July, 1861; re-enlisted Aug. 26, 1861, and fought in most of the important battles of the war. He was wounded at the battle of Antietam, and was finally given an honorable discharge Aug. 25, 1864. He was employed as a blacksmith by the Pennsy and retired at the age of 65 years. He was a member of the First United Brethren church, Post 62, G.A.R., the B. F. Davis lodge of Odd Fellows and the Pennsy relief. Surviving are two children, Harry Cruse and Mrs. Nettie Straw, both of this city and three grandchildren.
