CULP PASSES AWAY AT HOSPITAL Attorney, Long Engaged in Practice Here, Succumbs After Brief Illness Attorney Hays W. Culp, prominent member of the Blair County Bar association and who had engaged in the practice of law in this city for the past forty-five year, died at 10:10 o'clock this morning at the Mercy hospital. He was 72 years of age. Mr. Culp had been in his usual health, but became ill in his offices yesterday afternoon, falling over and striking his head. He rallied and was able to be taken to his home at 2010 Maple avenue, where he rested last evening. However, early this morning, Mr. Culp suffered a relapse and was taken to the hospital at 5:10 o'clock. Members of the family were at the bedside. While the cause of death has not been definitely determined, it is believed that the head injury he suffered in the fall yesterday afternoon proved fatal. Native of Blair Mr. Culp was born in Sinking valley, Blair county, on Dec. 2, 1868, the son of Samuel and Mary A. (Wilson) Culp. He obtained a public school education and was graduated from Indiana State Teachers college in 1890 and from Grove City college in 1893. He entered the legal profession reading law for three years in the offices of H. B. Baldrige in Hollidaysburg. He was admitted to the bar in 1896 and in the same year inaugurated his practice in Altoona. Mr. Culp was associated in the practice of law for a time with Matthew M. Morrow, then for several years with the Craig and Bowers Law company, and with James H. Craig. He then opened offices for himself and since continued in the practice of his profession, maintaining offices in the Lippman building at Eleventh avenue and Thirteenth street. Held Official Posts He formerly served as solicitor of the Altoona Chamber of Commerce and for almost a quarter of a century was solicitor of the board of directors of the poor of Blair county, all the while being engaged as a general practitioner before the county and appellate courts. In his political affiliations, Mr. Culp was a Republican, but he never aspired to any public office. He formerly served as a member of the Blair county board of road _____ and was solicitor for several building and loan associations in this city. Mr. Culp served as Altoona district supervisor of the federal census in 1930 and maintained offices in this work in this city. Married In 1902 On Oct. 2, 1902, he was united in marriage with Miss Margaret Crawford of Sinking valley and the couple established their home in this city. The widow survives, along with three children, Foster Culp of this city, Samuel Culp of Oil City and Mrs. J. Fred Campbell of Tyrone. Five grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. John Wilson of this city, also survive. Mr. Culp was a devout member of the Broad Avenue Presbyterian church for many years and served as a member of the board of trustees for a number of years. CULP - Funeral services for Hays W. Culp of 2010 Maples avenue will be held Monday afternoon at 3 o'clock at the Lafferty funeral home in charge of Rev. Roland Bradford, pastor of the Broad Avenue Presbyterian church. Interment in Alto-Reste burial park. Friends may call at the family house after noon today and until Monday noon when the body will be removed to the funeral home for services. _____ Margaret (Crawford) Culp Margaret C. Culp of 2010 Maple Ave., died unexpectedly at 6:20 a.m. Saturday, July 4, 1970, at her home. She was born in Sinking Valley April 28, 1874, a daughter of Foster and Louisa (Tussey) Crawford, and married Atty. Hays W. Culp, who died Aug. 1, 1941. Surviving are three children, Foster of Altoona, Samuel of Sharon and Mrs. Margaret Campbell of Tyrone; six grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. Mrs. Culp was a member of the Broad Avenue United Presbyterian Church. She had served on the board of the Hollidaysburg Presbyterian Home for a number of years. She was an early graduate of the Grier School, Birmingham. Friends may call at the Lafferty Funeral Home from 7 t 9 p.m. today.
