Samuel Culp, a prominent citizen of Sinking Valley and well known in this community, died at his home at Culp Friday at noon, after an illness of two weeks with neuralgia of the heart and stomach. He was a blacksmith by occupation, and at the time of death was postmaster at Culp and tax collector for Tyrone township, which positions he honorably filled for many years. He was a private soldier in the Mexican war and also served in the Two Hundred and Fifth Pennsylvania volunteer infantry in the civil war. He was a member of Colonel D. M. Jones post No. 172, Grand Army of the Republic, and also a pensioned soldier of the Mexican war. The deceased was born in Centre county in March, 1824, and at death was nearing the end of his 75th year. He leaves the following children, who with his wife are left to mourn their great loss: Frank P., of Horr, Montana; Benner W., Hayes W., and Mrs. John M. Wilson, of Altoona; Mrs. Martin Haslett, of Spruce Creek, and Miss Julia, residing at home. The remarkable feature of his illness is in the fact that previously he had never been ill in his life, being until then a stout and robust man. Altoona Tribune, Thursday, February 9, 1899
