Alphonse Pedro Curere, one of the leading merchants and best known Italian residents of the town, died last evening at 7 o'clock of pneumonia, with which he had been ill for the past two weeks, at his home corner of Mulberry and Clark streets. Deceased was a son of John and Mary Curere and was born at St. Pedro, Italy, forty years ago, his father being the owner of a large fruit farm. The son came to America in 1901, first residing in Philadelphia for six months, when he came to Hollidaysburg and was in charge of a workmen's commissary for Riley and Webber, when that firm built the East Hollidaysburg freight classification yards. Eleven years later he entered the grocery business in the building at the corner of Walnut and Bella streets now occupied by Groceryman T. I. Smith, and five years ago removed his store to Allegheny street near Penn, where he had been ever since. Mr. Curere was a very intelligent man and possessed of a genial disposition, and his untimely demise will be deeply regretted by all who bore his acquaintance. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Rose Drass Curere, two children having been born to this union, both of whom are dead. His father and mother, one brother, Santo, in the Italian army, and two sisters, Josephine and Catherine, also survive and reside in Italy. Deceased was a member of the St. Michael's Catholic church. The funeral arrangements will be announced later. Altoona Times, Altoona, Pa., Thursday Morning, November 14, 1918
