Counsil, aged 55, of 1221 Fifth avenue died at Mercy hospital at 2:27 o'clock this morning, apparently of internal injuries. Stephen K. Harkness, aged 64, of 1223 Sixth avenue is a patient in Mercy hospital suffering from a dislocation and fracture of his right arm and a severe laceration of the scalp which required six stitches. He is conscious and his condition is regarded as fairly good. The automobile which struck the two men was driven by Rudolph E. Mack of 203 Second avenue but is owned by Miss Hazel L. Salkeld of 1903 Fifth street. The automobile was traveling east on Sixth avenue and according to Mack's report at City Hall, Harkness and Counsil stepped directly into the path of his machine, from behind a line of cars traveling west on the avenue. Skid marks from tires showed on the avenue paving for a distance of twenty five feet west of the point of the accident, according to the report made to police headquarters by Officer A. J. Winiger, who investigated the accident. According to a sister of Mr. Harkness, the two men looked in both directions before starting across the avenue, her brother told her this morning, and remarked that the way was clear and safe. The two men, friends of long standing, had spent the evening together and were on their way to their homes when the accident occurred. The noise of the accident aroused the residents of the neighborhood, among them Dr. C. E. Snyder of 1201 Sixth avenue, who called Mercy hospital and had the two men removed there. In the dispensary it was found that Counsil had suffered a possible skull injury, a puncture wound of the upper right arm and possible internal injuries. Coroner Chester C. Walking by night and hiding by day, they finally came to Bedford and found refuge with John Love, one of the little band, who had come from the Carter plantation in Virginia some time before. They were pursued but remained here.
