Obituary not dated Archie Claar Obituary Collection, Vol. 4, p. 27 (1936) AGED MAN FOUND DEAD IN SHANTY George Bierline, Lifelong Resident of Hollidaysburg, Evidently Becomes Ill and Dies In Night. George Bierline, an aged resident of Hollidaysburg, who resided alone in a shanty in that section across the railroad near the Condron Planing mill known as Canal street, was found dead in his shanty this morning at 9.30 o'clock. He evidently died some time during the night. The cause of death has not been fully determined, but the man was ill yesterday, according to information given officers by people living in that section. Yesterday afternoon the Hollidaysburg mail carrier delivered Mr. Bierline's old age pension check. It was observed that the man put on his overcoat afterwards and started away, presumably to get the check cashed. It was also noticed that Mr. Bierline did not go far until he returned to his shanty. Neighbors heard him making some fuss and moaning during the night. This morning when he was not seen about, Chief of Police Harris Baird and Private Elmer Schmoyer of the state police were notified and went to the shanty and ascertained that the aged man was dead. It was at first thought that Mr. Bierline had perished from the cold, but the officer found him wearing his overcoat and with plenty of fuel and clothing to keep him warm, had he not been ill. It is thought that the man had contracted grippe and may have been too weak to keep up the fire, so that the cold weather of the night may have been a contributing cause of death. Mr. Bierline, according to those who knew him, was about 75 years of age. He was a son of Frederick and Barbara Bierline, pioneer residents of Hollidaysburg, and resided there all his life. He was never married and an only brother died some months ago in Washington. He was employed by the Pennsylvania Railroad company early in life and later worked at odd jobs about the town and on occasions for the borough. Coroner Chester C. Rothrock was notified and ordered the body removed to the Creamer & VanAllman morgue, where it will be prepared for burial. An inquiry will be made to locate possible relatives or friends. Since being too old for manual labor and in a rather feeble condition, he was receiving an old age pension from the state. The check he received yesterday was still in his possession and nothing in the shanty was disturbed, so that he was not the victim of foul play as was at fight thought possible. Obituary not dated Archie Claar Obituary Collection, Vol. 4, p. 27 (1936) Funeral Notice Funeral services for George Bierline of Hollidaysburg, who was found dead Thursday morning at his home, will be held at 2 o'clock this afternoon at the Creamer & VanAllman funeral home, Hollidaysburg.
