Obituary hand-dated 8/25 Archie Claar Obituary Collection, Vol. 9, p. 91 (1938) CAR REPAIRMAN IS KILLED, TWO HURT IN SHOP ACCIDENT One man was injured fatally and two others slightly hurt at 8 o'clock this morning in the Twelfth street car shops when a box car being repaired ran away and crashed into the car on which the men were working. The dead man was Charles M. Gray, aged 32, of 208 Jackson street, Hollidaysburg, who suffered crush injuries of the chest. The injured are J. Zimmerman of Martinsburg and F.S. Carothers of the city, both of whom were treated in the railroad emergency hospital at Ninth avenue and Twelfth street. Mr. Gray died in the railroad dispensary at 8.25 o'clock despite the ministrations of physicians and the dispensary nurse. The Altoona hospital ambulance was called to remove him to the institution, but arrived after his death. Deputy Coroner Chester H. Wagner investigated the accident, with shop officials. He found that Gray had been engaged in driving rivets from a car to be repaired, along with Zimmerman and Carothers, [line missing] end of the car, with their backs toward the direction from which the runaway car came. The box car was started moving by means of an electric truck, with a man stationed on top of the car to apply the brakes. The brakes failed to hold, however, and the car ran over a stop-block on the rails and on two and a half car lengths to where it struck the other car. Mr. Gray was caught between the couplers of the two cars while Zimmerman was thrown to the side, suffering an injury to the elbow. Carothers, who was inside the car, was thrown to the floor by the force of the collision, suffering bruises of the hips. The men engaged in moving the box car attempted to warn the others but were unable to reach them ahead of the car, their shouts going unheard in the noise of the air hammers used in the shop. The accident occurred at the west end of what was formerly the wheel shop. Gray and Zimmerman were rated as car builders and Carothers as a helper. Charles M. Gray was born in McKee, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Gray, and had resided there until taking up residence in Hollidaysburg.
