Death came to him very suddenly and was the result of heart failure. The deceased was long a resident of Altoona. He was born in May, 1814, in the town of Mountmellick, Queens county, Ireland, where he was married to Miss Annie Langhington, who survives him. Accompanied by his wife he came to this country almost half a century ago, first residing in the west and afterward coming east to this state and settled in Mill Creek, Huntingdon county, living afterward for a brief time in Huntingdon. In October, 1850, with his family he came to Altoona and resided in this city and in Logan township until the time of his death. He was by trade a baker and engaged in this business for some time after his coming to this city, afterward embarking in the hotel business in which he remained until April, 1865, when he purchased the farm on which he resided at the time of his death. While the Pennsylvania railroad was being built in this vicinity Mr. Dempsey did considerable contract work for the company. Since 1865 he had followed the occupation of a farmer. To Mr. and Mrs. Dempsey there were born four children, of whom but one is living, Mr. Joshua Dempsey, who resides on the farm and has for several years past. The deceased was a member of St. John's Catholic church and his funeral will take place on Tuesday morning, leaving the late residence at 8 o'clock and proceeding to the church where, at 9 o'clock services will be held. Interment in St. John's cemetery. Altoona Tribune, Altoona, Pa., Monday, August 12, 1889, page 1
