Detwiler, 88, Homewood at Martinsburg, formerly of 707 E. 24th Ave., Altoona, died Monday evening at Altoona Regional Health System, Altoona Hospital Campus. Ray was born in Altoona, son of the late Samuel L. and Statia M. (Daugherty) Detwiler. He married Martha E. Williams Aug. 21, 1943, in Fayetteville, N.C. She died Aug. 20, 2001. Surviving are two sons: Terrance R. Detwiler of Fairfax, Va., and David C. Detwiler and wife, Jill, of Chantilly, Va.; one daughter, Sandra J. (Detwiler) Kyle of Marietta, Ga.; seven grandchildren; four great- grandchildren; and was very close to niece and nephew, Frank and Delores Ake. He was preceded in death by a brother, Doran; a sister, Lois; and daughter in law, Claudia M. Detwiler. Ray was a member of First Baptist Church. He retired in June 1976 as the instrumental music director for the Altoona Area School District. He was a 1938 graduate of Altoona High School, a 1949 graduate of Juniata College and received his Master's Degree in music education at Penn State University in 1955. During World War II, he was originally with the 110th Infantry Division Band and then the 17th Airborne Infantry Band in Europe. He played trumpet since 1929 and was a trumpet teacher in his home studio, as well as Ricche Music Store and Blair Christian School, Duncansville. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, June 19, 2008, at Mauk & Yates Funeral Home Inc., Juniata. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home with the Rev. Tyler Pepper officiating. Interment will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery.
