He was a son of David and Susan (Leffard) Dickson and was born in Sinking valley, Sept. 10, 1862. He was united in marriage with Mary Ellen Morrow about sixty-three years ago. She died in 1936. He had been a resident of Tyrone for fifty-three years and retired from active work at the Tyrone paper mill some years ago after a service of thirty-three years. He was the last of his immediate family. Surviving are two sons and two daughters, Mrs. Harry Kaufman, David C. and Joseph A. Dickson all of Tyrone, and Mrs. Linus Gill of Milesburg and a number of grandchildren. He was of the Presbyterian faith and a veteran of the Spanish American war, having been raised in rank to second lieutenant while in service in Puerto Rico. He was a past president of the Spanish American veterans association, an associate member of the American Legion and became a member of the old Sheridan troop in 1880. He served as judge of elections in the Fifth ward of Tyrone for many years. Friends will be received at the Graham and Getz funeral home in Tyrone. DICKSON - Funeral services for Adam Leffard Dickson of 1409 Blair avenue, Tyrone, will be conducted Friday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock in the Graham and Getz funeral home of Tyrone in charge of Dr. R. _. Hutchinson. Interment in the Arch Spring Presbyterian cemetery. Friends will be received at the funeral home. _____ Bertha (ENGLE) DICKSON Mrs. Bertha E. Dickson who resided with her daughter, Mrs. Ralph Brown of 401 Washington Ave., Tyrone, died at 11 p.m. Saturday in the Tyrone Hospital, after a brief illness. She was born at Milroy on Dec. 7, 1886, a daughter of John H. and Mary (Cox) Engle, and resided from 1908 in Tyrone, where on July 7, 1915, she married David C. Dickson, who died April 14, 1951. Surviving is only the daughter. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Crawford Bible Class, Mission Helpers and auxiliaries to the hospital and U.M.C.A. in Tyrone. Friends will be received in the Graham & Getz Funeral Home, Tyrone, after 7 p.m. today. _____ David C. DICKSON David C. Dickson of 1556 Logan avenue, Tyrone, well-known former member of borough council and sportsman, died Saturday afternoon at 5 o'clock after an illness of several years. Mr. Dickson was born march 27, 1887, in Sinking valley, a son of Adam L. and Mary Ellen (Morrow) Dickon. He was married July 7, 1915, at Tyrone to Bertha C. Engle by Rev. Herbert W. Biber. Mr. Dickson was interested in Tyrone High school sports and was a member of the Orange and Black club. He was also a charter member of the Scootac Peck Hunting club and was active in game preservation and stocking of streams. Mr. Dickson served 12 years as a member of borough council during the time the water works was acquired. He earlier had been employed by the Pennsylvania railroad for 13 years but since 1919 had been employed by the West Virginia Pulp & Paper company. Surviving are his wife, one daughter, Jane, and two sisters and one brother, Mrs. Mary Kaufman of Tyrone, Mrs. Linus Gill of Bellefonte and Joseph A. of Tyrone. Mr. Dickson was a member of the First Presbyterian church of Tyrone for more than 50 years and was a deacon for 13 years. He was also a charter member of the Coulter Sunday school class. He held membership in the Sheridan troop for nine years. Friends will be received at the Graham & Getz funeral home, Tyrone. _____ Edith (GIBBS) DICKSON Mrs. Edith Gibbs Dickson, 1058 Lincoln ave., who had been a guest in the Presbyterian Home, Hollidaysburg since Dec. 5, 1964, died Sunday at 7:40 p.m. after an extended illness. She was born Aug 16, 1891, at Tyrone, a daughter of George Jones and Nettie F. Hancock Gibbs, and was married May 22, 1917, at Tyrone to Joseph A. Dickson Sr., who died in 1960. She had been a lifelong resident. She is survived by three sons, George G., of Dayton, Ohio, Joseph A., Jr., of Dayton, Ohio, and John H. of Steubenville, Ohio. Eight grandchildren and three nieces also survive. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Tyrone, the Fort Roberdeau Chapter of the D.A.R., and auxiliaries to the Tyrone Post American Legion, U.M.C.A., and Tyrone Hospital Funeral service will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Graham and Getz Funeral Home in charge of the Rev. Richard K. Giffen and the Rev. John P. Martin. Interment will be in Grandview Cemetery. Friends will be received at the funeral home after 2 p.m. today and until the time of service on Wednesday. _____ John H. DICKSON, Sr. John H. Dickson Sr., 65, of 464 Park Ave., Tyrone, and since March 19 a guest at the Hollidaysburg Veterans Home, died Friday, June 28, 1991, at 10:35 p.m. at the James E. VanZandt Veterans Administration Medical Center following an extended illness. He was born Feb. 4, 1926, at Tyrone, the son of Joseph A. Sr. and Edith H. (Gibbs) Dickson. On Oct. 7, 1950, he was married to Betty Jane Rightnour. She died April 20, 1988. He is survived by three sons and two daughters, John H. Dickson Jr., Portland Ore.; Adam Dickson, Korea; Joseph Dickson, Mesa, Ariz.; Dawn Nagle, Tyrone; and Dede Leitz, Spring City; 10 grandchildren and two brothers, George Dickson, Dayton, Ohio; and Joseph Dickson Jr., Beavercreek, Ohio. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, a 1944 graduate of Tyrone High School and a 1950 graduate of The Pennsylvania State University with a bachelor's degree in ceramic engineering. While in high school he was Tyrone's first state wrestling champion. In 1944 he won the state championship in the 145 pound class and was the first state champion to graduate as an honor student. He was a member of the Golden Eagle Monogram Club Hall of Fame in 1988. He was a member of the Scootack Hunting Camp. He was a U.S. veteran of World War II, serving in the Pacific Theatre with the 95th Ordinance Maintenance Company station on Saipan. He had been employed as a ceramic engineer for Youngstown Sheet and Tube and for Plibrico Company of Chicago, retiring in November 1987. Funeral service will be held Wednesday, July 3, at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Charles J. Swenson officiating. Interment with military honors will be at Grandview Cemetery. Friends will be received at the Richard H. Searer Funeral Home Tuesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Contributions in his memory may be made to the First Presbyterian Church or to the Foundation for Research for Parkinson's Disease. _____ Mary Ellen (MORROW) DICKSON For forty-three years a resident of Tyrone and the wife of Leffard Dickson, died at her home, 1409 Blair avenue, last night at 10:25 o'clock. She was daughter of George and Mary McCormick Morrow and was born in Sinking valley in 1851 and was united in marriage with Mr. Dickson fifty-four years ago, who survives, with these children: Mrs. Harry E. Kauffman of Tyrone, Mrs. Linus Gill of Milesburg and Joseph A. and David C. Dickson, both of Tyrone. She was a member of the First Presbyterian church. Funeral services will be conducted at the home Saturday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock in charge of her pastor, Rev. Dr. J. A. Speer. Interment will be made in Arch Spring cemetery. _____ Mary (DICKSON) KAUFMAN 1968 A life resident of the Tyrone area, died at 11:45 p.m. yesterday in the Hollidaysburg Presbyterian Home, where she had been a guest for the past three years, after a lengthy illness. She was born in Sinking Valley June 8, 1883, a daughter of Adam L. and Mary Ellen [Morrow] Dickson, and on Jan. 20, 191, was united in marriage by the Rev. M. R. Scafe with Harry E. Kaufman, who died April 4, 1951. Surviving are a son, Donald C. of Midland, Mich.; five step-children, Mrs. Warren Way of Alexandria, Mrs. Walter Dougherty of Canonsburg and Mrs. Karl E. LaPorte, Mrs. Wilbur F. Albright and Harry E. of Tyrone; 11 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and a sister, Mrs. Linus Gill of Tyrone. Mrs. Kaufman was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and E. W. Stine Bible Class, Tyrone. Friends will be received in the Graham & Getz Funeral Home, Tyrone, after 2 p.m. tomorrow and after 2:45 p.m. Saturday.
