All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/pa/blair/ _________________________________________ MERRILL SIDNEY DORAN Merrill Sidney "Sonny" Doran, 77, of Stoney Brook Acres, Riggles Gap, RR 1, Box 501, Altoona, died Sunday at 7 p.m. at his residence after an extended illness. He was born in Bellwood, PA, the son of Merrill Michael and Harriet Noble Bush (Wesley) Doran. He was formerly married to Barbara Jane Brehm, now deceased. On Feb. 27, 2004 in Winchester, VA, he married Maureen Elizabeth Adams. He is survived by his wife Maureen Adams Doran of Altoona, three-step children: Josh and Julie Dionis and Jordan Adams, three cousins: Harriet Ion Phelps of Mannford, OK, Betty Cruis of Bellwood and DeRonda Smith of Hollidaysburg. He was a graduate of Bellwood High School in 1946. He served as an officer in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict. Merrill S. Doran, a retired Certified Public Accountant, is a life member of the Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants (PICPA) and an Honorary Lifetime member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. He is a former member of council of the PICPA and a past president, president elect and secretary of the Central Chapter of the PICPA, of which he was one of the founders. In his early professional years, he was a staff accountant with Price Waterhouse, one of the then "big eight" accounting firms, a United States Air Force Officer assigned to the USAF Auditor General, a faculty member at Altoona Campus of Pennsylvania State University, a partner in several local accounting firms and a Burroughs Corporation assistant branch manager. He received his Bachelor of Science Degree from Indiana State Teachers College, now Indiana University of Pennsylvania, majoring in both accounting and retailing, in January 1949. At graduation, he was 20-years-old. Doran graduated, in 1946, from the Bellwood-Antis High School, where he was the starting center and linebacker for three years, on their championship football teams. He also played the same positions in college. He previously served on the Bellwood-Antis School Board, chairing the Finance, Audit and Legislation committees, and over the years, belonged to a number of civic, service and private clubs, including the Rolling Rock and Frankstown Hunt Clubs. He was a member of Sigma Tau Gamma Fraternity and also Gamma Rho Tau, honorary fraternity. Political activities included membership in Senator John Heinz's "Three Hundred Pennsylvanians", a group that from time to time met in Washington for briefings by members of Congress and the Executive Branch. He, on occasion, would demand members of Congress vote in accordance with his views, and did not hesitate to remind them they were servants of the people. At the request of the deceased there will be no viewing. A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 2, 2005 at 10 a.m. at the Derman Funeral Home, Inc., Tyrone, with Mr. James G.
