J. L. DOUGHERTY.

  At ten minutes of 4 o'clock on Saturday morning, Mr. J. L. Dougherty, 
an aged citizen of Altoona, died at his residence, No. 1722 Ninth 
avenue, of Bright disease.  Mr. Dougherty was aged 73 years, 5 month 
and 16 days, having been born June 6, 1817, in the county Leitrim, 
townland Lembarkin, three miles from Ballamore.  In 1848 he came to 
America, living a brief time at Danville, at Bellefonte, at Union 
Furnace and at Spruce Creek, coming from the latter town to Altoona.  
He was one of the pioneers of the Mountain City, his residence here 
dating from April 30, 1851.  He was married to Catharine Love, in 
Letterkenny, Ireland, April 19, 1848, who preceded her husband to the 
eternal world four years ago.  He leaves five children, who are: 
Joseph, David and William Dougherty, Mrs. W. W. Hesser and Mrs. J. M. 
Hughes.  Besides his family he had no relatives in this country, but 
leaves four brothers and one sister, who reside in England.  For two 
years past Mr. Dougherty had been in failing health, yet during this 
time he exhibited great patience as becomes a Christian.  He was a 
consistent member of the First Lutheran church of this city, attending 
whenever his health permitted.  The deceased was a member of Mountain 
lodge No. 281, Free and Accepted Masons, and was one of the oldest 
members of the fraternity in the county, having joined in Ireland in 
1841.  He was a kind and indulgent father and had a large circle of 
friends in this city.  The funeral will leave his late residence, No. 
1722 Ninth avenue, at 2 o'clock this afternoon, and proceed to the 
First Lutheran church, where services will be held.  The Interment will 
be made in Fairview cemetery.
