Saturday morning at 7.30, Mr. Wesley Downs, a well known resident of Altoona, died at Mt. Union, to which place he went about a month ago on business. He took sick with a complication of diseases and his condition became serious. Last Thursday his wife was summoned to his bedside. Mr. Downs was born Feb. 5, 1849, in Morrison's Cove. He came to Altoona some twenty-five years ago, first opening a grocery story at Twelfth avenue and Fourteenth street. He closed business out and entered the services of the Pennsylvania Railroad company as a blacksmith. Ten years ago he opened a jewelry store here, which he conducted for some years, finally disposing of his stock and going to Johnstown, where for two years he conducted a shooting gallery and pool room. Several months ago he returned to this city and on April 1 he opened a pool room in the Masonic temple, which he ran for but two months. Thirty-three years ago he was married to Annie Lingenfelter, who, with five children, survives him. The children are: Mrs. George Prunkard, of Fairview; Mrs. James Smawley, of Altoona; Charles, the city electrician; Richard and Sylvia, at home. He is also survived by a sister, Mrs. Margaret Deffenbaugh, of Fairview, and a brother, Mr. Daniel Downs, of Westmont. Mr. Downs was a member of the Knights of the Mystic Chain. Funeral services will be held at the house at 2.30 this afternoon and interment will follow in Fairview cemetery. Altoona Times, Monday, July 20, 1903
