DUMM HAS BOTH LEGS CRUSHED. Slipped and Fell While Getting on Train, Fifteen Cars Running Over Him, and He Died at the Hospital from Wounds. Brakeman Edward W. Dumm, 2507 Seventh avenue, was fatally injured in the Altoona yards last evening at 5.30, and died at the hospital about 9.50 last night from the effects of his wounds. Dumm, who was a brakeman on the yard crew in charge of Conductor Charles Way and Engineer F. E. Bingaman, went to get on the train as it was going through the yard east of ND office about 5.30 yesterday evening, and the sole of his shoe was loose. The loose sole caught and threw him under the wheels of the train, fifteen cars passing over his legs, crushing the right one between the thigh and the knee and the left one at the knee. The injured man was removed to the hospital at once, but his condition was such that nothing could be done for him, his vitality being at such a low ebb. Every effort was made to revive him, but without avail, and he lingered until about 9.50, when he succumbed to his injuries. Deceased was a son of George (deceased) and Mary Dumm, was born in this city on Feb. 24, 1873, and was therefore aged 30 years, 4 months and 21 days at the time of his death. He has been railroading for about five years. He was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic church, of the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen and the Pennsylvania railroad relief. He is survived by his mother, his wife, nee Mary Crowl, who is a bride of just one month, they having been married on June 16, and these brothers and sisters: John, Albert, Louis, Leo and Mervin Dumm, Mrs. James Endress, Mrs. Joseph Lusk, Misses Stella and Arelia Dumm. Coroner McCartney was notified of the death and will investigate. The remains were turned over to Undertaker Stevens to prepare for burial, and the funeral announcement will be made later.
