WAS STRICKEN WITH PARALYSIS For Years He Was Prominent in the Ranks of the Local Democracy and Was at One Time One of the City's Aldermen. HE WAS BORN IN CAMBRIA COUNTY. At 10 o'clock yesterday morning, 'Squire Thomas A. Durbin, an old and well-known resident, died at his home, 2405 West Chestnut avenue, of paralysis. He had been enjoying fairly good health up until Saturday morning about 9.30 o'clock, when he suffered a stroke of paralysis. He seemed to be recovering from its effects, but yesterday morning he was stricken with a second stroke. He continued sinking until he passed into the great beyond. The deceased was born near St. Augustine, Cambria county, April 11, 1830. He came to Altoona thirty-five years ago and was the first alderman of that part of the city which now comprises the Fifth and Sixth wards, having been elected at the first municipal election in 1868. He served but one term and did not seek re-election. After retiring from the office he engaged in the mercantile business in the old Franklin hotel property at Seventeenth street and Ninth avenue. He continued in business for several years, and since then has lived a retired life. In politics he was a democrat and took an active interest in the affairs of the party. He was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic church and enjoyed the esteem and friendship of a wide circle of acquaintances. In 1858 he was married to Belle Creighton at St. Augustine, Cambria county. She preceded him to the grave eighteen years. Four children were born to the union, the Eldest, Edward, dying some years ago. He is survived by two daughters, Sadie C., a teacher in the public schools, and Celia, at home, and one son, George, of Youngstown, O. He is also survived by these brothers and sisters: John and Luke Durbin, Miss Ann Durbin and Mrs. Mary Dodson, of Chest Spring, Cambria county. Funeral arrangements will be announced later. The funeral cortege will leave his late residence, 2405 West Chestnut avenue, at 8.30 o'clock and proceed to Sacred Heart Roman Catholic church where services will be held at 9.
