Ernest Durst died yesterday morning at 8.15 o'clock at his home, Landis street and Duncansville road, Llyswen, death being caused by a complication of diseases after an illness that extended over a period of six weeks. He was born in Germany on March 12, 1860 and came to this country in 1881. He was the son of Jacob and Christine Durst, deceased, and was married to Christina Lee on March 11, 1893, in Miles City, Mont., at which time he was stationed at Fort Kiel with the United States regular army, having served from 1884 to 1894. At this time he was given an honorable discharge as first sergeant in company B, 22nd infantry. Mr. Durst, while in the service of the U.S. army, participated in the battle of Wounded Knee, in December, 1890, in the Bad Lands of the Dakotas, in which Sitting Bull was killed. This engagement marked the end of the Sioux uprising. He had learned the printing trade in Germany, but at the time of his illness was employed as a gang leader in Pennsy machine shop No. 2. He is survived by his widow and one brother, Emil, and one sister, Sophia, both of Germany. He was a prominent lodgeman and was a member of Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Mountain City lodge, No. 837, Encampment of Odd Fellows, No. 129, Eleanor Rebekah lodge, No. 21, Logan lodge, No. 490, the Free and Accepted Masons, consistory of Harrisburg, Jaffa temple and an ex- member of Jaffa patrol, Knights of Pythias, Logan lodge, No. 79, charter member of Orinoco tribe, No. 424, Improved Order of Red Men and the Pennsy relief. The funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at 2.30 from his late residence. Interment will be made in Rose Hill cemetery. Altoona Times, Altoona, Pa., Thursday Morning, October 31, 1918
