The Pittsburg Post of December 4 contained the following item: "Charles Elder, a negro 50 years old, died early yesterday morning in the western penitentiary, where he was serving a term for felonious assault and battery. Heart failure superinduced by asthma, was the cause of death. Elder lived in Hollidaysburg and was sentenced to prison from Blair county to serve two years and eight months. He arrived at the penitentiary last January. He was a veteran of the civil war and a member of the Grand Army of the Republic. He Hollidaysburg Grand Army post took charge of the remains, which were sent east last night." The remains were interred at Hollidaysburg yesterday morning. Morning Tribune, Tuesday, December 5, 1899
