Sudden Death of a Former Tyrone Resident in Jefferson County. Robert N. Ellenberger, of State College, but until recently a resident of Tyrone, died at Dayton, Jefferson county, yesterday. It is not yet known here what was the cause of his death, his family not even having been apprised of his illness. It is therefore probable that he died very suddenly. Mrs. Ellenberger and family received the sad news yesterday at State College and at once came to Tyrone where they are awaiting the body which is expected to arrive here this evening. Mr. Ellenberger was a traveling salesman, engaged in selling the Osborne farming implements. He was on one of his usual trips when overtaken by death. The last his family had heard from him was last Tuesday when they received a letter from him, and at that time he was in good health. Robert N. Ellenberger was born in January, 1855, near Marengo, and was aged 45 years and 1 month. Until ten years ago he resided on the old homestead, and as a young man he engaged in farming and in teaching school. Twenty-one years ago he was united in marriage to Miss Clara J. Hannah, who survives him together with two children, Edgar G. and Roberta M. His aged mother, Mrs. Susanna J. Ellenberger still resides near Marengo, and he is also survived by the following brothers and sisters: James, of Altoona; George, of Marengo; David, of Warriorsmark; Mrs. Jacob Barto and Mrs. David Powley, of Marengo. The deceased with his family came to Tyrone a little more than ten years ago to accept a clerkship in R. S. Seeds' implement house. A few years ago he became a salesman and he was meeting with success as a representative of the Osborne machines. Last September the family removed to State College where the son is a student. During his residence in and near Tyrone Mr. Ellenberger made a host of friends. He was an exemplary gentleman in every way, cordially esteemed by all who knew him. His fellow citizens recognized his worth by choosing him a public school director here, his term not having yet expired when he removed from the town. In his younger days he served several years as a member of Sheridan Troop, attaining the rank of sergeant, and he was especially proficient as a soldier, being one of four members of the organization who won a trophy at Mount Gretna about a dozen years ago in a contest with the City Troop of Philadelphia. A consistent and devoted Christian, Mr. Ellenberger was a member of the Methodist church for the past nineteen years, and he manifested constant interest in the welfare of his church and the practical performance of his Christian duty to his fellowmen. The funeral services will be held in the First Methodist church Monday afternoon at 1 o'clock, Rev. Horace Lincoln Jacobs and Rev. W. M. Frysinger D.D., conducting the services. Interment in Tyrone cemetery. Tyrone Daily Herald, Saturday, February 24, 1900 The funeral of the late R. N. Ellenberger, which occurred from the First M. E. church this afternoon, was largely attended. Rev. H. L. Jacobs, of the Altoona First Methodist church, assisted Dr. Frysinger with the service.
