Miller shabodeho@aol.com October 23, 2012, 12:31 am Altoona Mirror 6/13/1944 Donald Elway 6/13/1944 Altoona Mirror Donald Elway Is Believed Drowned City and state police and Pennsylvania railroad officials are seeking the body of Donald Elway, aged 8, twin son of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Elway of 121 East First avenue, who is reported drowned this afternoon in the Pennsylvania railroad fire dam located below the Kettle reservoir. Donald and his twin brother, Jack, accompanied by two friends, Jerry Biechler and M. Burns, had gone to the dam before noon to fish. Jack reported then Donald had gone down to the dam to attempt to recover Jack's fishing rod. Jack returned home with Donald's clothes and informed his mother that the brother had been drowned. Hearing cries in the Elway home, C. E. Miller of 127 East First avenue, and his son-in-law, George Johnson of 123 East First avenue, went to the Elway home and upon learning what had happened, drove to the fire dam. Unable to find the boy, they called Altoona hospital which, in turn, called city police who sent out the radio car. State police, in the meantime, had also been called and hurried to the dam. One of them immediately began diving for the body and was joined by Ed Fox of Crawford avenue and First street. Capt. Louis Pielmeir of the Pennsylvania Railroad fire department went to the dam to supervise the draining of the reservoir if it became necessary. The dam provides high pressure water service for the railroad's fire hydrant system. Donald Elway has one other brother, Eugene, aged 12. The father is in Pittsburgh today seeking new employment.
