Death of an Aged and Esteemed Resident of Altoona. Mrs. Sarah Elway died at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. J. S. Hamlin, Howard avenue and Ninth street, at 4 o'clock Thursday afternoon. For several years past the deceased had been a sufferer from bronchial troubles, but about eight weeks ago was stricken with paralysis, which was the cause of her death. When stricken her left side was partially paralyzed, but she still retained the power of speech and was able to talk up until a few hours of the time of her death. During her illness she was carefully nursed and received the best of medical attendance, but these did not avail and death closed her eyes and she entered into that long sleep which must come to all. Mrs. Elway was born in Herefordshire, England, April 1, 1808, and was consequently aged 79 years and 28 days. About sixty years ago she came to this country, and for nearly forty years had lived in Altoona or its vicinity. Her husband, Rev. James Elway, died in this city twenty-five years ago. She was the mother of eleven children, eight of whom, with twenty six grandchildren and eight great grandchildren, survive her. Her surviving children are: Henry Elway, of Duncansville; J. S., J. A. and Lemuel Elway, of Altoona; and Mrs. M. Cashling, Mrs. D. Ferguson, Mrs. B. F. Light and Mrs. J. S. Hamlin, also of this city. The deceased was a loving wife and an affectionate mother. So also was she an earnest Christian, having connected herself with the church when she was 16 years of age, and being at the time of her death a member of the Chestnut avenue Methodist Episcopal church. Her life's work ended, she could await the coming of death without fear, conscious in the knowledge that she had done what she could to make stronger the kingdom of her Master on earth.
