C. Fanning, of 1235 Nineteenth avenue, formerly Miss Emily Lauver, was yesterday notified by the adjutant general's office that her husband, Lieutenant Winthrop Colt Fanning, died in France on March 10, of bronchial pneumonia following Spanish flu. Lieutenant Fanning was a New Yorker and was one of the early volunteers in the United States aviation service, after war was declared. Rapidly acquired proficiency as a flyer won for him the rank of a second lieutenant and for almost a year he was detailed as an airplane instructor on aviation fields in the states, notably at Detroit, where his wife was with him for many months in 1918. After a furlough in which Lieutenant and Mrs. Fanning were guests in the Juniata home of Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Bennett, the aviator went to France last fall. The bereaved young wife was a Juniata girl and taught for several years in the borough schools. Later she was instructor in High school at Sewickley. In civil life the deceased soldier was also engaged in advanced educational work. Since his sailing to France last November, Mrs. Fanning and their baby son, Winthrop Colt Fanning, jr., have resided at 1235 Nineteenth avenue, Altoona. Altoona Tribune, Friday Morning, March 21, 1919
