Febbo, aged 22, son of Mr. and Mrs. Christopher Febbo of 1604 Fifth avenue, was killed in action in the crash of a plane in China on April 2. In a letter written March 24, he reported that he had completed thirty-three missions and expected to start home after completing four more. First word of his death was received in a war department telegram to his parents received April 14, but this morning a letter, giving details of his demise, was received at the home from Maj. Gen., C. L. Chennault, commander of his group of the American Air Force. The letter reported that Sgt. Febbo was serving as radio operator and gunner of a plane engaged in an important mission. He was killed when the plane made a crash landing ten miles east of Yankai, China, his death apparently having been instant and without pain. The body has been interred in an American military cemetery at Kunming, China, with full military honors. In concluding the letter Gen. Chennault wrote "Your boy was a fine type young American soldier, respected for his military qualities and also admired for his splendid personal traits, loyalty and conscientiousness, a radio-gunner of exceptional skill. He was awarded the Air Medal in recognition of his achievements in aerial flight." Sgt. Febbo had never written his family of receiving the Air Medal. The family last heard from him in a letter written on March 31, and received an hour before the telegram announcing his death. Sgt. Febbo had been overseas for the past year. He entered the Air Force on Feb. 29, 1942, training at Clearwater, graduated as a radio operator and received his wings and at Las Vegas, Nev., where he trained in gunnery. Sgt. Febbo was born in Altoona on Jan. 9, 1923, a son of Christopher and Mary (D'Ercole) Febbo, and was graduated from Altoona High School when he was 17 years old, in the class of 1940. Prior to entering the service he was employed at the Cuzzolina barber shop, at the Glenn L. Martin plant in Baltimore, Md., and at the time he entered the service at the Eaton plant in Cleveland, O. Surviving are his parents, and the following brothers and sisters, Anna, at home, Nellie and Mrs. Josephine Santorelli, in Cleveland, O., Mrs. Elvira Pullano, Mrs. Elizabeth Herman and Tony, at the home, and William of Cleveland, O.
