Last night a dispatch dated Fort Wayne was received in this city stating that Eugene Filer, a freight conductor on the Pittsburgh, Fort Wayne and Chicago railroad, had been badly injured at Chicago. His folks live on Eighth street, this city. They have not yet been found and it is not certainly known who they are. It was too late last night when the word came to discover them, but they will be notified this morning. Morning Tribune, Altoona, Pa., Thursday, November 20, 1880 The Injuries of Eugene Filer. A short item yesterday morning announced that Eugene Filer, of this city, had been injured in Chicago. He is a son of Aaron Filer, a music teacher, who lives on Seventh avenue. About five years since he left Altoona, having been previous to that time employed in the company pain shop. He was a freight conductor on the Pittsburgh, Fort Wayne and Chicago railroad, and his injuries were caused, so far as we can learn, by a wheel running across his breast. He was still alive last night, but his injuries were though to be fatal. Morning Tribune, Altoona, Pa., Friday, November 19, 1880 Eugene Filer Dead. Mention has been made in these columns of the serious injury of Eugene Filer, who was reported as hurt at Chicago a few days since. It appears that Filer was instantly killed but that on account of the feelings of his relatives the word was sent that he had been hurt. The Fort Wayne Sentinel says that he was standing on the track near the outer depot, when his train suddenly backed, threw him down and ran over his body, cutting him in two and killing him instantly. Another account of the accident is to the effect that Filer was swinging between the cars, when he fell as was run over. Two of the brothers- in-law have gone to Chicago and will bring the body to Altoona for burial. Morning Tribune, Altoona, Pa., Saturday, November 20, 1880 CITY AND COUNTRY. Things Briefly Told. The remains of Eugene Filer, who was killed at Chicago last week, reached this city yesterday. The funeral will take place from his father's residence, No. 814 Seventh avenue, this afternoon at 2 o'clock. Religious services at the house, conducted by Rev. Dr. Hamlin, of the First Methodist Church, and interment in Fairview cemetery. Morning Tribune, Altoona, Pa., Tuesday, November 23, 1880 Wonderful Vitality. Eugene Filer, whose tragic death at Chicago has already been noted in the TRIBUNE, exhibited remarkable vitality after the severe wounds he received. The manner in which he met his death has not been correctly stated heretofore, but occurred in this way: He was between two cars on the train, and with a hand on each car he attempted to draw himself to the top of the cars so as to catch the deck with his feet. His first attempt failed and the second precipitated him to the track. He was caught beneath the train and rolled along the track, crushing and bruising his body, splitting open his chin, tearing off one hand, and cutting off one arm. Notwithstanding these frightful injuries he lived two days afterward. Morning Tribune, Altoona, Pa., Tuesday, November 23, 1880
