Five other persons suffered injuries in the accident which occurred as the youth's family and grandparents were returning from a vacation trip to Canada. The injured were taken to the Philipsburg State hospital for treatment. Donald Friday was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital. Charles J. Konekl, jr., aged 33, of 948 Hill street, Archibald, Lackawanna county, driver of the truck, is reported in fairly good condition at the hospital where he was admitted with a possible chest injury. Mike Kravits of the same address, a passenger in the truck, is suffering from a possible chest injury. Pending X-ray examination, his condition is reported by the hospital as fairly good. Also treated and released from the hospital were: Mrs. Gladys Friday, lacerations of the face and head; Rachel Mae Friday, aged 10, lacerations of the face; Gerald Friday, aged 8, lacerations. David Fink of Northwood, Tyrone, 67-year-old grandfather of the fatally-injured youth and operator of the automobile, escaped injury, as did his wife. According to Pvt. V. E. Bell of the Pleasant Gap detail of the state police, the accident occurred when the Fink car, traveling west on route 220, went into a skid after rounding a curve. Starting to swing around, the car struck the truck which had pulled onto the berm and was traveling slowly in an eastward direction. The force of the collision demolished the left rear corner of the car where the youth was sitting. Koenkl told police he had pulled off the highway and had come almost to a complete stop when the vehicle struck him. It was raining at the time. Harvey Haddad of Schuylkill Haven, a passenger in an automobile driven by Marion Lloyd of Altoona, happened on the scene soon after the accident occurred. Haddad said the mother and children were suffering from shock and that the fatally injured youth suffered crash injuries of the face. Police made no estimate of damage to either vehicle. Donald C. Friday was born July 14, 1936, in Northwood, Tyrone. Altoona Mirror, Saturday, July 24, 1948, pages 1, 11
