Gardner, esq., Cashier of the First National Bank of Hollidaysburg, died at his home on Allegheny street, on last Sunday afternoon at two o'clock. Tho'h it was generally known here that for some months past, Mr. Gardner had been in delicate health, and required almost constant attending, the announcement of his death came unexpectedly. His death resulted from hardening of the arteries of the brain, and though for several years past he had been an invalid, he was only confined to his bed for some ten days previous to his demise. The deceased was born in Centre county, in 1826 and was almost sixty years of age when the summons to depart, came. He was married in 1850. From 1843 to 1860 he was engaged in business either as employe or proprietor, in Cambria county. At the outbreak of the civil war, he accepted a position of division clerk in the U.S. Treasury Department at Washington, D.C. He resided in Washington for a few years, when he removed to Hollidaysburg, afterwards, in 1868, he was appointed Cashier of what is now the First National Bank, a position which he acceptably and most successfully filled until his labors closed with his life. He was a careful, correct and upright business man, possessed of wonderful executive abilities. He enjoyed the respect and esteem not only of a wide circle of friends and acquaintances in Hollidaysburg, but throughout Blair and Cambria counties, and his death will be learned with regret wherever he was known. His funeral occurred at three o'clock p.m. on Tuesday last, and interment was made in the Presbyterian cemetery of Hollidaysburg. The Martinsburg Deposit Bank was closed on Monday and Tuesday of this week out of respect to his memory. Martinsburg Herald, July 19, 1888
