"Jim" Garland, 70, of 307 Sixth Street, Tyrone died Thursday, February 19, 2004 at 7:54 a.m. at Bon-Secours Holy Family Hospital. He was born March 15, 1933 in Tyrone, a son of the late Robert and Thelma (Welch) Garland. On Aug. 29, 1953 at St. Luke's Church, Whiston, England he was married to Catherine K. Box whom he met while stationed in England during the Korean War. Surviving are his wife, a son, Kenneth V. of Tyrone; two daughters, Janice M. Endress and husband Mark of Bellwood, and Krista R. Peles and husband Robert of Starford; seven grandchildren and six great- grandchildren. Also, three sisters, Mardell Cooper of Tyrone, Ardis Hamer of Spruce Creek, Patricia Estright of Tyrone; a brother, Ronald of Eden Hill; two sisters-in-law Nora Speak, and husband Sam, and Agnes Box, all of England; and a special aunt, Ethel Garland of the VA Home, Hollidaysburg. He was preceded in death by an infant son, Alan Michael; an infant brother, Daryl; and two sisters, Charlene Williams and Carol Tinsley. Mr. Garland retired in 1995 from Westvaco, Tyrone as a roll finisher in the loading department following 39 1/2 years of service. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean War, serving in England with the Air Police as an Airman First Class. He was a member of St. Matthew Catholic Church as was a 1951 graduate of Tyrone High School. He enjoyed flea markets, yard sales, toy train collecting, Notre Dame football, Tyrone sports and spending time with his dog "Pepi." Funeral services will be held Sunday, February 22 2004 at 2 p.m. at Feller Memorial Home with Fr. Joseph T. Orr officiating. Burial will be at Oak Grove Cemetery. Friends will be received at the funeral home on Saturday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. and on Sunday from 1 p.m. until the time of services. Tyrone Daily Herald, February 20, 2004
