Garland, age 99, a guest at the Hollidaysburg Veterans Home and formerly of Washington Avenue, Tyrone, died Saturday, March 5, 2005 at 7:48 p.m. at Altoona Regional Health System Bon Secours Campus. She was born December 24, 1905 at Northwood, Tyrone, the daughter of Herbert J. and Gertrude Piper Schmidt. She was twice married, first to Merle E. Garland and secondly to Howard J. Garland who died September 14, 1991. She is survived by one daughter, Mary Belle Mattern of Tyrone; two granddaughters, Deborah, wife of Dan Lucas of Shelocta and Kathy, wife of Gary Barr of Tyrone; four great-grandchildren, Paul Lucas and wife Lorrie of Warren Oh., Christopher Lucas of State College, Stephanie Barry of Statesville, NC and James Barry, Jr. of Tyrone; two great-great-grandchildren, Danielle Stein and Breana Lucas, both of Warren, Oh.; one sister, Pearl Wilson of Tipton and two brothers, Ross Schmidt of Bellwood and James Schmidt of Tyrone. She was preceded in death by three sisters, one brother and one infant brother. She retired in 1968 from Big Yank as a floor lady and swing girl. She was a member of Howard Gardner Post No. 218 American Legion Auxiliary and a life member of Anderson Denny Post No. 4559 Auxiliary and of the Termite Cootiette Club No. 585. She loved to crochet, had a love for flowers, had a number of pen pals and had great love for her family. She was known by many as "Grammy" or "G". Funeral services for Mrs. Garland will be held Tuesday, March 8, 2005 at 1 p.m. at the Richard H. Searer Funeral Home Inc. with Reverend Peggy Bonsell officiating. Private interment in Grandview Cemetery will be made at the convenience of the family. Friends may call at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. on Monday.
