Mr. Samuel Garland, while out in the field yesterday, Nov. 10, had a paralytic stroke. He was carried to his home where he lays in a critical condition, his life being despaired of. Tyrone Daily Herald, Tyrone, Pa., November 17, 1888 Samuel Garland, whose illness has heretofore been noted in these columns, died at his home at Bald Eagle at ten o'clock last night. The funeral will take place to-morrow morning at 10 o'clock. He was 73 years of age. Tyrone Daily Herald, Tyrone, Pa., November 19, 1888 The body of Mr. Samuel Garland whose death has already been announced, was placed in an elegant casket and buried at Olivia, Tuesday morning at 11 o'clock. Mr. Garland had been unwell for the last six months and a few months ago had a slight paralytic stroke, the effect of which had been telling on him; yet never complaining always found in deep meditation no matter when you met him. He was a man easy to approach, always ready to give any information regarding the old furnace or its properties, on which he was well posted. He hadn't an enemy in the world and spoke kindly of everybody. It is but a few years ago while enroute to Philipsburg to see a dying daughter, his wife sitting by her side closed her eyes in death without uttering a word. In the dark and lonely mountains he was left alone and returning to his home with his wife in his arms in death and now without a moments warning he is carried to his home in an unconscious state and thus died without uttering a word to his children. This is certainly a sad affliction to his bereaved family and friends. His body was followed to the M. E. church by a large concourse of friends where the late Rev. H. M. Oberholtzer of Tyrone Lutheran church preached a very impressive sermon to the people. His age was 73 years. The following children survive him: David Garland, Hollidaysburg; Mrs. Elizabeth Wallace, Tyrone; Mrs. Ellen Copenhaver, Olivia; and Joseph Garland, Barree. Mrs. Ourn of Snow Shoe; Mrs. Rorabatch of Hollidaysburg; Mrs. Margaret Koon, and Mrs. Mary Ann Woomer, David Garland and Henry Garland, Olivia, are the brothers and sisters left to mourn his sudden calling off.
