One of Taylor township's oldest and best known farmers, William Gartland, died in his 84th year at his home in that township at 8:40 o'clock Thursday evening, after a lingering illness due to old age. Mr. Gartland was born in Taylor township and spent his entire life there. His wife, who was Mill Ellen Bice, of Osterburg, preceded him to the grave some years ago. Mr. Gartland was a progressive farmer and was always interested in the welfare of the township. He was a lifelong member of the Roman Catholic church. Surviving are three sons: Francis, George and Edward, all of Taylor township; also two sisters, Mrs. Eli Mower, of Roaring Spring, and Mrs. John Shaffer, of Altoona. Funeral arrangements were not completed last evening and will be announced later. Altoona Tribune, Friday morning, June 7, 1918, page 10
