Gathers, the beloved wife of Mr. Samuel Gathers, 403 Eighth street, departed this life last evening at 6.10 o'clock, surrounded by numerous relatives and friends. The deceased lady was born in Centre county, on the 10th day of January, 1832; hence she was 58 years, 10 months and 13 days old. It was in Reedsburg, Clarion county, Pa., on the 19th day of April, 1848, that she was married to Mr. Samuel Gathers, a gentleman well known and highly respected by this community. She with her husband were residents of this city for forty years. Six children blessed this union of hearts and hands. The eldest, Mary Araminte, is the wife of Mr. Henry, Denz, of the telegraph department of the Pennsylvania railroad shops. The next in seniority of age is Mrs. Flora A., wife of Frank P. Law, a moulder in the soft iron foundry. The third is Mrs. Adelle, wife of William Clabaugh, a painter in the lower paint shop. Next comes Mr. Harry Gathers, an employe of the erecting shop. The fifth is Mrs. Nevada, wife of Thomas Carney, also an employe of the erecting shop. The sixth and youngest is Mr. Charles Oscar Gathers, of the same department. Dropsy was the disease with which Mrs. Gather had been afflicted and which resulted in her death. She had been confined to her room from January, and since July so aggravated became the complaint that she was unable to lie in bed and was compelled to sit and repose in a chair until the dread summons came. She received the best medical attention and the most careful nursing from the commencement of her illness until the time of her death. Mrs. Gathers was a member of the Second Lutheran church of this city, one of the earliest members and, during her entire life, gave a practical and continuous illustration of true faith in Christ and a firm and sincere belief that, to a true Christian, death is but the entrance of eternal life. The funeral will occur to-day. The cortege will leave the house at 2.30 p.m. for the Second Lutheran church, where religious services will be conducted by her pastor, Rev. J. F. Hartman, after which it will proceed to Fairview cemetery, where the remains will be interred in the family burial enclosure. Morning Tribune, Altoona, Pa., Monday, November 24, 1890
