MARTINSBURG MATTERS.

  George Geist, of whose illness we spoke last week, died at the 
residence of his daughter, Mrs. Susan Kemberlin, at 3 o'clock Monday 
morning, aged 81 years and past.  The deceased was born in Conestoga 
township, Lancaster county, Pennsylvania, on the 22d day of April, 
1809, and was married to Christianna Hess on December 9, 1833.  Just 
when Mr. Geist first came to this county is not definitely known, but 
as near as we can learn, he came to Allegheny Furnace about 1838 or 
1840, and thence to this place some years later.  The deceased was the 
father of twelve children, nine of whom survive him - three daughters 
and one son residing in the far west, and three sons and two daughters 
residing in this place.  The figure and form of the deceased are among 
the earliest recollections as a man of industry and hard labor, being a 
fence-maker by trade during the summer months, and a butcher for the 
winter season.  In the latter calling his reputation was such that he 
could not supply the demand, as it was said none could do it as he 
could.  He was a quiet citizen, of reserved nature, and having at a 
good old age passed to his reward, leaving behind him a good name and a 
family of creditable children.  The deceased was married twice, his 
second wife surviving him.  Funeral on Wednesday forenoon at 10 
o'clock.
