All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/pa/blair/ _________________________________________ THOMAS HAROLD GIBB Thomas Harold Gibb, 49, of Hollidaysburg and a native of Ebensburg, PA died July 4, 2003 at Presbyterian Hospital, Pittsburgh. Born November 6, 1953 in Johnstown, son of the late John Harold and Bernice (Jones) Gibb. Survived by brothers: Herman J., married to the former Judith Jones, Alexandria, Virginia and John W., married to the former Diana Malsatski, of Fairfax, Virginia. Also longtime companion Kay Stephens, of Altoona; and nieces and nephews: David J., Elizabeth Anne, John T., and Kristina Marie Gibb. A graduate of Central Cambria High School in Ebensburg, Tom began his journalism career as an English student at Penn State. He was a talented reporter, editor and editorial cartoonist. Upon graduation at Penn State, he became a reporter for the Altoona Mirror in 1976, later appointed to the position of city editor in 1987 and managing editor in 1990. Upon leaving the Altoona Mirror in 1993 he free-lanced articles and cartoons to many news organizations including the Pittsburgh Post- Gazette, Harrisburg Patriot-News, Johnstown Tribune Democrat, the Ebensburg Mountaineer Herald, and the Associated Press. In 1998 he became a full time reporter for the Pittsburgh Post Gazette serving as the Central Pennsylvania Correspondent. He received publishing awards for the Que-Creek Mine Disaster and many other venues. His editorial cartoons appeared locally in the Altoona Mirror and the Mountaineer- Herald, as well as USA Today, Newsweek and Time Magazines. Tom was a member of the American Association of Editorial Cartoonist and a life- member of the Penn State Alumni Association. Also he was a member of the Ebensburg First United Church of Christ (Congregational) where he served as past president and member of the Deacon Board, prison ministry, pastor search, music and historical committees. Friends will be received from 6-9 p.m., Sunday, and 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m., Monday at the Askew-Houser Funeral Homes, Inc. 300 North Julian St., Ebensburg. 15931. Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m., Tuesday at the Ebensburg United Church of Christ, the Rev. William C. Thwing, officiating. Interment at Lloyd Cemetery, Ebensburg. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Tom's memory may be made to the Ebensburg United Church of Christ Memorial, the American Heart Association, or Penn-State Altoona.
