All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/pa/blair/ _________________________________________ RETIRED MERCHANT CALLED BY DEATH Isaac Goldstein, aged 89, of 2004 Broad avenue, for many years a well known merchant in the city, died at his home at 5.06 o'clock yesterday afternoon after having been in failing health for a number of years. Mr. Goldstein was born in Poland on Dec. 22, 1849, and came to this country in 1862. He was one of the city's pioneer business men, coming here in 1867 and engaging first in the wholesale business. Later he engaged in the retail business, conducting the Fair department store at 1313 Eleventh avenue, at the time of his retirement twenty-five years ago. On Dec. 25, 1869, he and Miss Leah Bartlestone were married in New York city, celebrating their sixty-ninth wedding anniversary last Christmas day. Eleven children were born to the marriage, ten of whom survive, along with Mrs. Goldstein. They are Mrs. H. S. Goldstein and Mrs. Aaron Goldman of Lewistown, Mrs. Sarah Saltzman, Misses Anna and Rae, at home, Mrs. R. R. Robinson of Curwensville, Dr. Abraham Goldstein and Nathen Goldstein of Pittsburgh, David Goldstein of New York city and Max of Altoona. Twenty-four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren also survive. Mr. Goldstein was a member of Temple Beth Israel and B'nai Brith. The body may be viewed at the home. Altoona Mirror, January 16, 1939 _____ MERCHANT'S AGED WIDOW SUDDENLY CALLED BY DEATH Mrs. Leah Goldstein, aged 92, widow of Isaac Goldstein, for many years a well known merchant in the city, died at her home, 2004 Broad avenue, at 7.05 o'clock this morning. Death came quite unexpectedly, although Mrs. Goldstein had been in ill health since the death of her husband on Jan. 15 of this year. She was born in Poland but had been living in this country since she was 6 years old, in Altoona continuously for the past thirty-seven years. On Dec. 25, 1870, she married Mr. Goldstein in New York city, the couple celebrating their sixty-ninth wedding anniversary last December. Mrs. Goldstein's maiden name was Bartelstone. Eleven sons and daughters were born to Mr. and Mrs. Goldstein, ten of whom survive as follows: Mrs. H. S. Goldstein and Mrs. Dora Goldman of Lewistown, David Goldstein of New York, Dr. A. Goldstein and Nathan Goldstein of Pittsburgh, Mrs. R. Robinson of Curwensville, Max Goldstein of the city, Misses Rae and Anna Goldstein and Mrs. Sara Saltzman, all at home. In addition there are twenty-four grandchildren and seven great- grandchildren. One son, Barney Goldstein of Pittsburgh, died on Jan. 8, 1938. Mrs. Goldstein was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was a member of Temple Beth Israel and while her health had forced her to relinquish all outside activities for some years she was well known for her charitable interests. Altoona Mirror, August 19, 1939 _____ BERNARD GOLDSTEIN Aged 57, son of Mr. and Mrs. I. Goldstein of 2004 Broad avenue, died at his home in Pittsburgh at 7.15 o'clock Saturday evening after three month's illness. He was born in Altoona and his death is the first to occur among eleven brothers and sisters. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Marie (Feld) Goldstein; one son, Harold of Pittsburgh, his parents of the city and six sisters and four brothers. Mr. Goldstein was a member of Temple Beth Israel congregation of the city. Interment was made this afternoon in Mount Sinai cemetery. Altoona Mirror, January 10, 1938 _____ MRS. BERTHA GOLDSTEIN Wife of Attorney Hyman Goldstein in Carlisle, died at 6 o'clock Saturday morning in the Carlisle hospital. She was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. S. Goldstein of Portage, a graduate of the Portage High school and Wilson college, Chambersburg. Surviving are her husband, parents and five brothers, Barney and Julian of Lewistown, Abraham of Bloomsburg, Samson of Johnstown and Merle of the United States Army in Honolulu. Interment was made this afternoon at Altoona. Altoona Mirror, May 12, 1941 _____ MISS RAE GOLDSTEIN Of 2204 Broad avenue, died unexpectedly at her home at 11 o'clock yesterday morning. She was born in Altoona Sept. 15, 1884, the daughter of Isaac and Leah (Bartlestone) Goldstein. Miss Goldstein was a former buyer for the William F. Gable company and retired in 1937 after 22 years of service. She was a member of Temple Beth Israel. Surviving are the following brothers and sisters: Mrs. Dora Goldman of Lewistown, Dr. A. Goldstein of Pittsburgh, Mrs. Amelia Robinson of Philadelphia, Max of Washington, D.C., and Miss Anna and a niece, Miss Florence Saltzman, both at home. Two brothers and two sisters preceded her in death. Friends will be received at N. A. Stevens mortuary after 7 o'clock this evening. Altoona Mirror, December 19, 1956 _____ ANNA GOLDSTEIN Of 2004 Union Ave., died at 3.45 p.m. yesterday, May 3, 1970, in Altoona Hospital, where she had been a patient as the result of a stroke since April 28. She was born in Altoona Dec. 14, 1885, a daughter of Isaac and Leah (Bartelstone) Goldstein. Surviving are a brother and sister, Mrs. Nellie Robinson of Philadelphia and Max of Deltone, Fla., and several nieces and nephews. Another niece, Miss Florence Saltzman, who resided at the home, died last Thursday as the result of shock from burns suffered at the home. Miss Goldstein was a member of Temple Beth Israel and the Sisterhood. Friends may call at the Lafferty Funeral Home from 7 to 9 p.m. today. Altoona Mirror, May 4, 1970 _____ MAX B. GOLDSTEIN Of Daytona Beach, Fla., died Wednesday, Sept. 19, 1973, at his home, after an extended illness. He was born in South Fork on May 22, 1896, a son of Isaac and Leah (Bartlestone) Goldstein, and was married to Frances Hooven. Surviving are his wife, a son, Leonard Wagner of Homerville, Ga., and a sister, Mrs. Millie Robinson of Philadelphia. Mr. Goldstein was a veteran of World War I. He was a retired drug merchandiser.
